Nicolas Sarkozy is sentenced to prison!

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and two former associates have been sentenced to three years in prison for corruption. However, each of them will serve only 1 year, since 2 have been suspended.

According to BBC, Sarkozy is accused of trying to bribe the judge, Gilbert Azibert, by offering him a prestigious job in Monaco in exchange for information about a criminal investigation into his political party.

According to BBC, prosecutors sought a four-year prison sentence for Sarkozy, half of which would be suspended.

The case centered on conversations between Azibert and Herzog, which were recorded by investigators revealing that Sarkozy accepted illegal payments from L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign.

Sarkozy is also expected to stand trial in a separate case from March 17 to April 15, which is related to the so-called Bygmalion case.

Sarkozy is accused of cheating in his presidential campaign in 2012. He served as president from 2007-2012. Sarkozy's former lawyer Thierry Herzog and Azibert received the same sentence. /Adapted from BBC ABOUT labyrinth
